Grammarly alternatives for non-native English speakers: 5 options and who each is for
Grammarly underlined nothing, and your message still sounded like it came from a translation tool.
Short answer: Grammarly alternatives depend on your problem. For translated-sounding messages on a Mac, try nonolingo. For many european languages, LanguageTool. For paraphrasing, QuillBot. For translation, DeepL. For long drafts, ChatGPT. This is nonolingo's own site, so we say plainly when another tool is the better pick.
Grammarly is built around correctness, clarity and style. This page is for people who found that correct is not the same as natural. Disclosure: nonolingo owns this site, so it is on the list and we have a stake. The other four use only facts we checked on 10 oct 2026, sources at the bottom.
What matters for non-native writers
- Catches translated phrasing. The hard case is a correct sentence no colleague would write. See email phrases that sound translated.
- Works in the box you type in. Every tab switch costs more than the fix.
- Tone. Polite, friendly and short are different jobs. The tone guide shows nonolingo's.
- Privacy. Most tools send text to a server. Read the policy.
- Price. Free tiers differ. Ours is on the pricing page.

The five options
nonolingo
What it is: a Mac app that suggests a light fix or a native rewrite while you type, in any text box. You can type Vietnamese and get natural English, or select a message for reply drafts.
Best for: people who think in Vietnamese and send many short English messages a day, where grammar is fine but tone reads as translated.
Limits: Mac only (macOS 14 or newer), and not a long-document editor. Text goes to a server, as the privacy page explains.
LanguageTool
What it is: a grammar and style checker for 20+ languages, on Mac via browser extensions, add-ons and its own editor.
Best for: people who write in several european languages, mostly in the browser.
Limits: by default, text is sent to its servers for checking. More style suggestions are in premium.
QuillBot
What it is: a paraphrasing suite with several rewrite modes, a summariser and a grammar check. Popular with students.
Best for: reworking essays, reports and longer paragraphs, and summaries.
Limits: free paraphrasing is capped per use (125 words, per recent reviews), and some modes are paid.
DeepL
What it is: known for translation quality. In the Mac app you select text and press ⌘+C+C. DeepL write improves text in a set of major languages.
Best for: translating documents or long text, and work between european languages.
Limits: a select-then-trigger flow. Vietnamese input was not listed for DeepL write in the sources we found.
ChatGPT
What it is: a general chat assistant that writes, rewrites and explains.
Best for: long or new drafts, brainstorming and explanations.
Limits: tends to write more than you need and varies with the prompt. It sees only what you paste.

What is the best Grammarly alternative for non-native speakers?
It depends on the problem. If your sentences are correct but sound translated, an in-the-box rewriter like nonolingo fits, on Mac. If you write in many european languages, LanguageTool fits. If you need long drafts, ChatGPT fits. There is no single winner, and this is nonolingo's own site.
Is there a free Grammarly alternative?
Several tools here have a free tier: LanguageTool, QuillBot and DeepL are listed with free plans or limits, and ChatGPT has a free tier too (all as of 10 oct 2026). nonolingo gives 7 days with everything on, then a free allowance every day. Limits differ, so check each pricing page.
Can Grammarly alternatives write from Vietnamese into English?
Some can. nonolingo accepts Vietnamese, with or without accents, and returns natural English. A chat assistant can also do it with a prompt. For DeepL write, Vietnamese was not listed in the sources we found as of 10 oct 2026, so check its page for the current list.
Do I need to switch if Grammarly already works for me?
No. If your English already sounds natural and you want polish, long documents or plagiarism checks, Grammarly is a reasonable choice. People who find correct messages still read as translated tend to add a second tool. Run only one in-box popup so suggestions do not collide.
