how to ask for a deadline extension without sounding like you're begging
it's wednesday, the deadline is friday, and your draft starts with "i'm so sorry but".
them: how are we looking for friday?
Sorry, maybe can we move the deadline a little bit if possible? This deadline is tight. Could we push it to Friday? I can share the core flow by Wednesday.

a deadline ask that sounds unsure gets a worse answer. "sorry, maybe can we move the deadline a little bit if possible?" makes your manager do all the thinking. a clear ask with a plan makes it easy to say yes.
the three parts
- the honest status. "this is tight", not a paragraph of reasons.
- a specific new date. "friday" beats "a bit later".
- what they still get. a partial version, a call, an update.
before and after
- Sorry, maybe can we move the deadline a little bit if possible? This deadline is tight. Could we push it to Friday? I can share the core flow by Wednesday.
- I'm afraid I cannot finish on time because too many tasks.I've got three launches landing this week. Can we move this to Monday so it gets proper attention?
- Please give me more time.I need two more days to get this right. Does Thursday work?
notice the pattern: no triple apology, one reason, one date, one thing they still get.
ask early. a monday ask is a plan. a friday ask is a problem.
